When Bahamian triple jumper Leevan “Superman” Sands suffered a serious leg injury while competing in the 2012 Olympics in London, many people thought his career was finished. But Leevan Sands was determined to prove them wrong.
Sands had sustained a ruptured patella tendon which meant his kneecap was wrenched out of place. It would require drilling holes in his knee to put it back in place and months of grueling rehabilitation. It took almost two years of physical therapy for Leevan just to reach the point where he could start training again…but that did not stop him.
Proving all the doubters wrong, Leevan not only returned to competition but did so triumphantly. In the last year he placed 10th in the world at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China; won a Silver Medal at the Pan American Games and placed third in the Chris Brown Bahamas Invitational against the likes of top ranked triple jumpers Christian Taylor of The United States and Troy Doris of Guyana.
Leevan Sands’ inspiring journey also caught the attention of Bank of The Bahamas Limited (BOB) and he was recently invited to meet with members of the bank’s Management and Sales Team. The Bank presented Sands with an incentive cheque and congratulated him on his recent successes.
Hubert Edwards, Chief Business Development Officer, BOB said Leevan Sands’ story is a one that needs to be told.
“Persons need to consider the fact that you were able to go through a very serious injury and come back and still jump at the same level. You have shown that you have something in you that is way more than the average person. Your comeback story is something that we at Bank of The Bahamas are drawing inspiration from. You are an inspiration to The Bahamas and an inspiration to the world and we welcome the opportunity to forge a relationship with you,” Mr. Edwards said.
Leevan Sands said he was very appreciative of the support shown by BOB.
“I’m just excited and I really appreciate the incentive. It was very devastating for me going through the injury and going through the rehab. It was a lot of blood, sweat and tears and then trying to make a comeback and to hear people say “Oh he’s finished”…It was very disappointing. My number one goal is to bring home a medal for my country. It has been challenging since I got injured so this is big for me,” Leevan said.
Hubert Edwards said no matter how Sands places at the Olympics when he steps on the runway he will already be a winner. Because of Sands he said The Bahamas will produce more world class triple jumpers, who will, no doubt, be inspired by his determination and passion for the sport.
